Simplicity is the key for a successful running game. In this video, Coach Nick Codutti will break down his 'bread and butter' wide zone run game that is almost always guaranteed to net positive yards!
Coach Codutti stresses the importance of keeping it simple for all players to learn their roles in the play. You don't need to be the biggest or fastest player to be successful with this run.
Running Backs
Coach Codutti explains what the running back is looking for, where he needs to run to, and the importance of getting vertical. By using different formations to run the same play, defenses get confused on what is happening and the offense will exploit and score on that confusion. You will see how they teach the wide zone fundamentals to running backs; this is critical as the wide zone concept has very specific rules to follow by the backs - this video presents them well!
Quarterback Play
Coach Codutti will break down the quarterback play in the wide zone as well. Codutti shares how to use the quarterback to hold opposite defensive end and outside linebackers so they won't be able to stop the run as well as teaching how to use the quarterback to run the wide zone to be a dual threat. Teaching the wide zone fundamentals to the quarterbacks is important because the quarterback will help set up the running backs on the path and also be a fake with their boot to help keep the heat off the backs.
Offensive Line
From there the video brings in other coaches that discuss how they teach the offensive line to run the wide zone blocking scheme. Teaching the wide zone blocking fundamentals to
the OL is critical because there are very specific rules that must be followed by the OL; this video does an excellent job of explaining the frontside and backside blocks/combos.
Placing all these features together will make the wide zone your go to running play in the seasons ahead!

Named to the 2021 Dave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine's '40-under-40' Coaches listMany offenses can lack an identity, but the wide zone run play gives your offense a base run play to hang your hat on.
At every stop in his career, Coach Nick Codutti has installed the wide zone with great success. In this video, Codutti explains how you can make it a staple in your offense arsenal as well.
The wide zone puts defenses in conflict, makes them run sideline to sideline, and has simple adjustments to make it work against any defensive look you will see. In 2022, the Fulshear HS (TX) offense averaged 8.8 yards per carry on wide zone; Coach Codutti and his staff are going to share the secrets on how they did it!
This video features detailed explanations of how the play works while showing multiple video examples of how the intricacies of it all work together.
Offensive Line Play
Coach Codutti's staff will show you how to install this play in a systematic way that allows your offensive line to block it against any defensive alignment or pressure. Because the rules are so simple, they can be applied to every position along the offensive line including your tight ends.
Codutti's staff will walk you through multiple video clips and explain the coaching points on each one of them to you. You will see many different ways you can run the play from multiple looks without any changes to the scheme up front. The four rules of wide zone will be explained using film with multiple examples of how to apply each of them to your program.
Coaching the Backfield
Allow your backs to play fast without thinking using a simple system of 'If/Then' rules. Those same rules can be applied to any ball carrier who runs the play, whether it be a running back, quarterback, or simply a talented player lined up in a Wildcat set that you need to find a way to get touches. Create a one cut run scheme that grinds opponents down and becomes more explosive as the game wears on.
Coach Codutti shows you how you can use this play in multiple ways to stress a defense and begin to build play action boot passes off of it. This video will show you how you can force a defense to play discipline and then use their rules against them to create explosive plays in the run game.
In this terrific video, you will learn the basics that will allow you to master the wide zone and help your team become lethal in the run game!
